My Son Is Bipolar 1 And Is Having Severe Side Effects From Seraquell. Is There A Herbal Alternative?
November 02, 2009
Seraquell has increased my son’s weight by nearly 80 pounds. He now has diabetes, which is a side effect of the drug. There must be a herbal alternative to Seraquell. Any ideas?

There is not really an alternative to Serequell. Serequell is a heavy tranquilizer. I have taken it to go to sleep before and I could hardly get up the nest morning. Downers have a tendency to make me eat more. I’m assuming the diabetes is from rapid weight gain. I have a son who is ADHD. I went to our local Health Food Store. They had a herbal/holistic section. They do have a herbal pill for kids who have AD problems. I think the name of it was “Attend”. I used it for about 6 months. As with any supplement, I had to give like 6-8 pills a couple times a day.I was buying 2 bottles a month and they were around $35 dollars a bottle. If that was the only thing I had to give him, it would have been different.Plus I was giving other supplements for other symptoms.I was giving my son about a dozen pills before he went to school. Plus I was doing organic juicing using organic blueberries, strawberries, etc. After about a month, I could tell a difference in my son with the herbal supplements and juicing. I never put him on any medicine from the doctor. There are herbal remedies but they can get very expensive. If you can afford it, try it. Serequell is an unhealthy medicine to have a child on. I would try EVERYTHING I could to find a healthy alternative. Feel free to email me if you have other questions. This is a serious subject. I don’t want to give you an answer and not be able to answer any other questions you may have.

Im not a doctor and you may take this as you may. I used to teach swimming lesson when i was younger and in my class i had two bipolar kids who were taking Seraquell which made them gain weight. I tell you this because their parents decided to get them into swimming to balance out the weight problem and avoid diabetes. I tought the kids (8 and 6 yrs old) for the whole summer and their weight dropped greatly. It was hard at times as their moods would change but once they saw other kids doing it and enjoying it, they wanted to join. Of course this all changes among kids, specially those who dont know how to swim or are scared of the water, but after all that was my job, to get them used to being in the water. Im not really sure of your location but if in the U.S., i believe they have swimming programs pretty much everywhere, you can go to (www.usaswimming.org). I hope this helps.

There are no herbal alternatives to Bipolar, have your son exercise and diet or change medication to one with less side effects. I originally was given seroquel and suffered side effects from it but I did some research on my own and found that Abilify has less side effects. I have been taking Abilify since and have had NO side effects at all! Try talking about this with your doctor.

As mentioned already there is no herbal remedy for Bi-Polar, there are however more anti psychotics your son can try.
Weight gain is unfortunately one of the commonest side effects, and because of your sons other health issues I can see why you are concerned. Ask his CPN/GP to try him on a different form of medication.

I’m afraid there isn’t. However, there are drugs that are less likely to cause weight gain (though it’s still a possibility), such as Abilify or Lithium. Get him to see his doctor and suggest the change.

There is not a herbal supplement comparable to seroquel. Speak with your Dr about your concerns, and tell him you want to try a different medication
